Bathing Forest: A Haven of Serenity in Urban Living

Japanese-Inspired Apartment Redefines Relaxation and Functionality

In the heart of the city, a serene sanctuary emerges, offering a respite from the clinical starkness of hospital walls. Bathing Forest, a residential apartment designed by Ting Jin Wang, embodies tranquility and versatility in its very essence.

The owner, a hospital professional, sought an antidote to the sterile environment of his workplace. The solution? A soft, relaxed space dominated by natural textures and a calming palette. Ting Jin Wang's design philosophy for Bathing Forest was to create a Japanese-style abode that not only soothes the senses but also caters to the owner's lifestyle needs, including fitness routines and guest accommodation.

Wang's innovative approach involved a strategic reconfiguration of the apartment's layout. The master bedroom was downsized to make room for a dressing area, while a Tatami room was introduced, complete with a high rack and sliding doors. This multifunctional space seamlessly transitions from a fitness area to a guest room, encapsulating the essence of minimalist versatility.

Storage optimization was key in this 67 sqm space. The entrance and kitchen areas were cleverly designed to maximize the sense of openness, with the refrigerator and storage cabinets strategically placed to enhance the visual flow of the public domain. The use of cement texture and Lotos arrangement throughout the apartment fosters a soothing atmosphere, while glass partitions and iron display cabinets replace traditional walls, amplifying the corridor's brightness.

Lighting plays a pivotal role in the design of Bathing Forest. Double sliding doors allow for flexible spatial definition, while a large mirror adorning the room walls not only creates the illusion of a larger space but also serves as a practical element for the owner's in-home workouts. The living room eschews a standard sofa set in favor of individual seating, fostering a more open and interactive environment.

The design's realization was not without its challenges. Achieving a uniform Lotos finish required meticulous planning and execution, ensuring that the entire application was completed in a single day to prevent any color discrepancies. The installation of glass doors in the Tatami room also demanded precision, with a jointless and integrated shape achieved by carving out a wood grain board and fitting the glass centrally.

Bathing Forest stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design, having been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2024. This accolade underscores the project's success in integrating functionality with aesthetic appeal, creating a space that not only meets the owner's needs but also contributes to a better quality of life.
